Solid Comfort was formed in March 1981 by Charles (Chip) and Barbara Larkin. Soon after, Chip’s father, Russ Larkin and close friend George Marchand joined the company as 25% stockholders. Chip eventually acquired all remaining shares in 1994. In January of 2008, Chip's sons - Jason and Ryan Larkin - purchased the company and owned together until December 2016. In January, 2017 the company remains in the family, Jason Larkin, sole owner/CEO is actively managing Solid Comfort today.
The company originally operated out of a 12,500 square foot building on the present location, and at that time built solid pine and oak office, family room, dining room, and bedroom furniture. The products were marketed in company-owned retail stores in Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota, and in Edina and Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
The new company was featured in the March 1982 issue of the Fargo Chamber of Commerce Newsletter. Chip Larkin was quoted in that publication: “Selling a diversified line of solid wood furniture for both home and office use direct to the customer has proven to be a very successful concept.” However, by 1984–85 the target market for Solid Comfort products had shifted to hospitality furniture and cabinets.
In 2013 the operation expanded to a remodeled facility of over 150,000 square feet. At Solid Comfort our manufacturing processes are highly automated, utilizing state-of-the art machines coupled with the skill and caring of experienced craftsmen.
In the spring of 2014 Solid Comfort announced an exciting new marketing and manufacturing OEM partnership. This Fargo managed collaboration brings the combined workforce to more than 600 employees and production facilities of more than 1,000,000 square feet. With marketing and sales responsibilities managed by Solid Comfort, customers can expect the same North America built case goods quality, delivery and support with significant increases in capacity and shorter lead times.
